How to Go About Finding the Best Niche

You either have a passion you want to write about, or you don't. If you are anything like me, finding the best niche is actually the hardest part of your internet publishing business.

I really haven't a clue what to promote. I'm also afraid of wasting money and time on something that doesn't work for me despite my best efforts. It took me ages to realise that just I had to take my best guess and try anyway. So, what have I found to help me in finding the best niche?

Here is a bullet list of ways and means to get ideas:

go to dmoz.org and look through the sub sections. Then dig down and look for program-type topics. eg Health, Weight Loss, Online Shopping, Programs.
do the same on Craigslist, but you need to look first by region and area or town. Then it opens up to show you loads of ads for all sorts of things.
article directories can give clues to what people are reading (not writing about). For example, if an article on any subject has a really high score of readers then in shows that the subject is popular.
Squidoo, HubPages and similar, can be used in the same way. Likewise Facebook, YouTube, MySpace etc.  will show you what's popular right now.
other sources for finding the best niche - BBC, eBay Trends, Google Trends, MSN Homepage

Once you have found a few niches which show promise, then you need to check how good they will be - but that's a whole new article - if not a book! But one way to see if there is any kind of demand is to relevant keywords into a Google search - if there's no-one else sponsoring ads down the right of the page, then chances are it's not going to sell, so move on to the next one.

What you are seeking is demand - what are people actually buying? This can be alluded to in what is being advertised. When you have found the demand you just need to find a product to fill it - even make or write one yourself.

All this is only the beginning. There's still a lot of work involved after finding the best niche - and you will need to be very organised. Better people than me have written programs, books and tutorials all about everything to do with finding the best niche, so I'm not going down that road here. I wish you every success in your niche hunting.
